Solutions for Detangling your Beard

Got knots? Under the chin especially? You aren't alone. This is common, especially amongst black men, and those of us with coarse curly beards.

The best time to detangle your beard is during the application of your beard conditioner, whether it be in shower or after. A well-made beard conditioner, when applied to a wet beard, provides the best slip for this process.

Under the neckline is an often-neglected area, which can lead to tighter tangles (also known as fairy knots).

If you have serious tangles and knots, try the following:

  1. Apply a generous amount of conditioner to your damp beard
  2. Slowly work the tangles out either by fingers, beard comb, or a detangling brush. This is not a process to rush through, so make sure you grant yourself time to work thoroughly.
  3. Let conditioner sit in beard for 3-5 minutes, then gently rinse with lukewarm water. For longer beards, hold your beard in place and rinse while you rinse, in efforts not to re-tangle too much.

Remember, this is a patience process. The longer those tangles go unaddressed, the longer the process. On the other hand, the more frequent you tent to your beard, the easier and quicker the process will be.
